Fanless CPU Cooler NCU2000
Technical informations:
Now the AMD user also can use the NCU, at least those who own and Athlon 64 , because now it is compatible. We already presented an A64 3400+ cooled passiv by NCU 1000 on the Cebit 2004. But there a few modifikations where necessary , but now the new NCU fits direktly on the AMD CPU socket.
The heat tansportation now works with a double layer heatlane , which is closed on the upper side. Also the finns at the heatsink are now optimist. Scythe the manufactor specified the NCU without any fan on a pentium up to 2,8 Ghz , even a 3,2 Ghz should be no problem.
Prices and availabillity:
The NCU2000 is now available at www.silentmaxx.de and also at Frozen_Silicon is with EUR 79,00 only a bit more expensive than the previous model.
Preword:
Sorry for my very bad english all typing and spelling errors belong to my own copyright.
Already before the cebit 2004 in Hannover /Germany we where lucky to get an eye on the new NCU2000 Fanless CPU Cooler and we present it in a preview . Time went by , and now we are pleased to give you more informations and first values from this new fanless cpu cooler.
Also there a activ readers that share their experiences in our forum . Because of that we have the possibillity to compare more than one systems and configuration.

Differences between NCU 1000 and the new Model:
The Old NCU came with a thick pictured manual , the now one only come with two A4 Pages. The Mainboard plate got canceled , because every board which needs it has it anyway. Because of that the total weight is lower , even with a higher expense of material. More finns are integrated in the heatsink , which are now thinner and and bigger.
The previous Model had a heatlane in U –form , the new one is closed on the other side and in a O-Form , plus it is doublelayered at the socket for better heat transport. They even placed a little alu cooler right above the socket. All together some positive facts , that promise a better cooling performance.
But of course we can´t expect any wonders , because physical laws will not be disabled , but one special thing should be mentioned. Scythe recommends the the old NCU a case fan , which is not necessary anymore for the 2000 modell. They already showed this on the Cebit.
Conclusion:
The NCU2000 is the current state of the art of fanless CPU cooler and cools much better then its previous model. Like me many users thought that there will be only a few changings with the new model, but that`s not the case at all. The manufactor says that there is no case fan requiered anymore and can be mounted on faster CPUs from Intel and AMD. The NCU1000 back in the time needed a indirect case fan , but it showed a complete new direction in a new colling technology. The new NCU shows now a grew up product with that technology, and its cooling potential currently no other fanless cpu coolers can reach.
Construction:
Most of the new NCU 2000 is compareble with the previous model , however the differences are present like the already mentioned double layer heatlane. The cooler socket now will be screwed with the Alu cooler , that the heatlane lays between them. The quality of all parts givs a positive impression.
Assemblling and Installation:
The mounting on the Socket 754 mainboard works now with only 2 screws on the
CPU Backplate. The screw are mounted with metal feathers , so the contact pressure can be proportioned exactly. In depending of the construction from the used mainboard , you may have to use the imcluding tools , because you may cannot reachs the screws which are under the finns.
On a Socket 478 board the 2 clamps get connected with the plastic frame on the the board and with spinnig the screws on the clamps makes contact pressure .
Basically the installation went wothout any problems. However we used mainboard which were open on a table , so every part was reachable very easily. If a AMD socket 754 is used , we recommend to get it out of the case during installing the NCU to avoid mounting problems , because the the fixing screws may not be reachable very good insinde a case.

Bildinfo:
Bei Mainboards mit NForce3 Chipsatz muss der NCU 2000 meist so eingebaut werden das die Befestigungsschrauben nur mit dem mitgeliefertem Maulschlüssel angezogen werden können.
Test requierements:
We tested the NCU with a so to say tropical enviroment. In our rooms we had no wind and/or air conditioning . Windows and doors where closed and we had over 30°C room temperatur. We tested the NCU in a open laying mainboard with a A64 3400+ ( Scythe only permits the NCU up to a 3200+). The open test avoids heatproblems like inside a closed case , but the standing vertical mounted NCU and the stronger CPU in a pretty warm room doesnt makes it very easy for Scythes new fanlles cooler.

Testresults: Comparing to the NCU1000: Back when we tested the old NCU we also had a standing mounted cooler on a mainboard which layed on a table outside a case. We used a maximum permited P4 with 2,8 Ghz. The roomtemperatur where 8°C lower like in the test now. The manufactor recommended a good air circulation for the old model. |

The NCU2000 solved the tests with better results , even with a faster (and hotter) CPU and the higher roomtemperatures. Only the Sandra Burn in Tests looks a bit unrealistic for me. Probably the cool´n quiet is activated and the CPU doesnt run in the maximum clock during the sandra test. But the 3D Mark 2001 fired the CPU , which you can see at the scores of 17853. Finally that are absolutly fine results for a passive CPU cooling and much better than we expected. I also tried to fire the cooler with a 120 mm papst power fan only to see what is possible and the temperature went down to 37,0 Grad !!! This is only 6,6 Grad above Roomtemperature !!! |

Last words / thanks
We thank the team of Silentmaxx for the sample of the NCU2000. Thanks for the innovation in the No-Noise PC Market. The kinda created the market for the fanless PSUs and with the P1 heatpipe case the showed what is possible.
Now the NCU2000 sets new cooling limits and we hope that someday a market will be created the same like the fanless PSU market. In the east world fanless cpu coolers are best sellers , in europe unfortunately they are rare , which will hopefully change with the new NCU 2000.

Notes:
This actually doesnt belongs to here but some readers might be intrested in that. The test with a passiv cooled 9800 Pro and a VM-101 shut down the system several times , because of overheating the graphic card. Then we replaced it with a FX 5900 and original cooler.
The cooling values are much better then our 860,- Euro customed made heatpipe cooler that we ordered (last year for the RSG PC) , which actually should have shown what is technically possible back in the time.
